The Silent Hill 2 Remake: Reviving a Horror Classic
For over 25 years, the Silent Hill franchise has defined the psychological horror genre in more than a dozen games, spinoffs, films, and soundtracks. First released in 2001, Silent Hill 2 would go on to gain recognition as one of the greatest horror games ever made—so when the Silent Hill 2 remake was announced in 2022, the excitement from fans was palpable.
Developed by Bloober Team in collaboration with Konami, the Silent Hill 2 remake arrived on October 8th 2024, selling several million copies to date. The modern reimagining follows protagonist James Sunderland as he returns to Silent Hill after receiving a letter from his long-deceased wife, Mary. In a town cloaked in fog and prowled by nightmarish creatures, players must face monsters, solve puzzles, and search for traces of Mary.

Widely praised by fans and critics alike, Silent Hill 2 (2024) is now the fastest-selling title in the series. Bloober Team and Konami set out bring the classic into the modern era, enhancing gameplay, audio, visuals, and AI, all without losing the haunting psychological complexity that defined the original—but they needed a partner to help them along the way. That’s where our Side Codev team stepped in.
*But before we proceed... Warning: Major Silent Hill 2 spoilers ahead!*
We had the privilege of working closely with Bloober Team on co-development for one of the key boss battles in the game: the meat locker battle with a disturbed young man named Eddie Dombrowski, one who has been failed by society and consumed by his trauma.
Read on to discover the backstory of our development process, and how we worked to deliver an experience that felt true to the original while making it immersive, tense, and engaging for a modern audience.
The Human Monster: Eddie Dombrowski
Eddie Dombrowski is a disturbed individual that James meets along his journey in Silent Hill 2. Their confrontation escalates into a violent encounter in a meat locker in the labyrinth beneath the Toluca Prison, reflecting Eddie's deteriorating mental state. The encounter delves deep into themes of guilt and psychological instability—and the boss battle that follows is no exception.
We worked with Bloober Team to redesign this pivotal part of the game from the ground up, including animation, AI behavior, and level functionality. With Eddie’s encounter, our Codev team was given a clear directive: stay faithful to the original but elevate it. This wasn’t just another enemy battle—it was a key psychological moment for both the player and James.

Unlike the nightmarish creatures encountered before, Eddie was a real, living person, pushing players to cross a moral and emotional line. While the character of James grapples with guilt and repression throughout the game, he initially tries to retain a moral compass. Eddie, however, has given in completely to his violent impulses, making him a cautionary reflection of what James could become.
Our team made sure the fight felt intense, unsettling, and narratively meaningful, while maintaining the claustrophobic dread that defined the original Silent Hill 2. To heighten tension and increase player disorientation, we restructured the fight into three escalating phases and built the freezing, fog-choked, densely packed meat locker where Eddie lurks.
Phase One
In the Silent Hill 2 remake, the first phase is a tense standoff where Eddie moves with intent, keeping the player on edge. In the environment of the meat locker, hanging slabs of meat act as cover for James, as the player attempts to outwit Eddie's tactics—dodging the shots from Eddie's revolver.

Phase Two
In the second phase, Eddie ups the ante by shooting steam pipes in the environment, filling the room with fog, and making it even harder for James to evade Eddie's attacks. With the lights going out and the thickening mist, players must rely on sound to track Eddie’s movements, reinforcing Silent Hill’s signature unsettling sensory horror. Eddie's behavior also changes, becoming more aggressive and trying to close in on James with melee attacks.

Phase Three
The frozen meat conveyor belts activate underneath, creating unpredictable movement throughout the room, visual obstructions, and misleading audio cues that made Eddie even harder to track. Eddie himself becomes more aggressive and unpredictable, and the player must continue using sound cues to track his movements. It’s the most intense part of the showdown, so the player must stay alert, dodging and attacking Eddie until he is finally defeated.
Enhancing Realism with Motion Capture
To ensure Eddie’s movement felt authentic and threatening, our team also developed his character for the remake using motion capture technology. Our Senior Animation Manager Devon Browne captured the movements, while our Head of Codev Alejandro García-Tuñón performed the sequences, using a prop gun for added realism, ensuring natural, weighty, and menacing weapon movements.

After capturing the performances, our animation team refined the data through Unreal Engine’s Control Rig system, allowing near real-time iteration. This enhanced Eddie’s fluidity and unpredictability, reinforcing his volatile nature.
Overall, our team was up to the task of supporting how Eddie’s characterization and realism could be further developed in the remake. With Eddie’s hallucinations and mental breakdown more vividly presented in the environmental storytelling, and dialogue emphasizing his desperation, players are given a fuller picture of how Eddie spiraled into violence.
By the end of the fight, the main protagonist James has crossed a moral threshold, having killed an actual human. This narrative moment lingers beyond the battle, feeding into the game’s themes of guilt and violence. In the end, Eddie Dombrowski’s tragic descent into madness and resulting outcome, makes him one of Silent Hill 2’s most memorable and disturbing figures. As a character, he exemplifies an overarching theme of the game: that darkness can live within human hearts.
